Return of the Mac[book] – The Playlist

This past spring, our house was broken into  and while there was a lot of emotions, one of the oddest transitions was no longer having access to our music. Our laptop was stolen, and while we had everything on a backup hard drive (whew), we had no way to access the hard drive. I did have some music on my phone, but other than that, nothing.

A couple months ago, we finally were able to replace our stolen laptop via renter’s insurance, and it’s been glorious listening to my entire library on shuffle. It’s like being reunited with an old friend and you remember all the reasons you love them. I haven’t given you a playlist in awhile, so I thought I would share with you my 25 favorite songs that I have been reunited with.

These aren’t my favorite 25 songs, these are just 25 songs that were not on my phone that have come up on shuffle since getting the computer back. You can download the playlist (for free!) by clicking on the album art. I’d love it if you left me a comment to let me know you got it, telling me which song you are most excited about. Below is the track list, and I hope you enjoy my Return of the Mac[book] playlist.

1) By Your Hand – Los Campesinos! (A very underrated band, and this song is fantastic)

2) Kick Your Game – TLC (We miss you Left Eye (well, Andre Rison’s house might not… what, too soon?)

3) Tulips – Bloc Party (They just came out with a new album but this song is a classic)

4) Can I Kick It? – Tribe Called Quest (Of course you can)

5) La Camisa Negra – Juanes (We used to drive to go surf and listen to this album. And yes, that makes no sense, but I love it)

6) Don’t Let Go (Love) – En Vogue (There is no way you don’t wish you were in En Vogue when this song comes on)

7) Bows & Arrows (Vegas) – Canon Blue (You’ll be my arrows)

8) Fu-Gee-La – The Fugees (This playlist was almost just their entire The Score album)

9) Player’s Ball – OutKast (A friend once told me they didn’t like OutKast. They were wrong)

10) Our Happy Home – David Crowder Band (Arguably their best song, and I will argue about it)

11) Gone – Kanye West ft Consequence & Cam’ron (Phenomenal. The strings. The churro/taco bell verse. The abrupt finish. Literally a perfect song)

12) Kettering – The Antlers (This song swells and I love it)

13) ATLiens – OutKast (Yeah, they got two songs on the playlist, but they are cooler than a polar bear’s toenails)

14) Caffeinated Consciousness – TV On The Radio (My friend Brian and I saw them preform this song live and it slayed the crowd. Too good)

15) First of the Month – Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (One of my first concerts, which is a weird statement in hindsight)

16) Come and Talk to Me – Jodeci (My 7th grade dance go to song. It was hard to choose between this and Tevin Campbell)

17) Don’t Be Cruel – Bobby Brown (You started dancing when this came on, didn’t you?)

18) Dos Gardenias – Buena Vista Social Club (Never before has a trumpet been so… sensual. Also, I apologize for using the word sensual)

19) Doo Wop (That Thing) – Lauryn Hill (Never again will my phone be without the proper Fugee representation)

20) Fill Me In – Craig David (I wish I was British for numerous reasons – we see you James Bond – but also so I could sing like Craig David)

21) Grindin – Clipse (I don’t say this lightly – probably the BEST song ever produced by the Neptunes)

22) When Doves Cry – Prince (The guitar is flawless. He can call himself whatever he wants if he started making songs like this again)

23) Juicy – Notorious B.I.G. (I relate with this song, probably because I use to read Word Up! magazine)

24) Swim Until You Can’t See Land – Frightened Rabbit (Stupid band name, great music)

25) Love Letters – Paper Route (Okay, this wasn’t on my computer when it got stolen, but I like them and am excited that their album is finally out)

I will gladly argue with you about “Our Happy Home.” It’s not even top 5 on that album.

Not even top 5 on the album?!?

      Here are the top 5:
      1) Happy Home
      2) You Are My Joy
      3) Come Awake
      4) A Beautiful Collision
      5) Do Not Move

Top 3 has to be some combo of You Are My Joy, Do Not Move, Rescue is Coming. Then there is a second tier group that contains O God Where are you now, Come Awake, Come and Listen and Happy Home.

So really it’s somewhere between 4 and 7.

Happy Home gets knocked down a bit for me because of where it falls on the album. Having to follow Do Not Move, Come Awake, and You are My Joy, it seems the weakest, so I probably knock it down a bit more than if it were to be grouped with Beautiful Collision, which it seems to fit better with.

Yes, I have thought about this entirely too much.

Haha, you’re totally right about Dos Gardenias! There can be no other way to describe that trumpet!
